About... Chesapeake was
formed in 1963 from the consolidation of South Norfolk city with
Norfolk County, creating the third largest city of Virginia. Its
community of 222,000 residents sits in the Hampton Roads harbor
area on the southeast part of the state.
The area has had a rich colonial history leading to the
Revolutionary War. The Great Dismal Swamp, near the city's
southwest corner, carries a legacy of runaway slaves hiding for
freedom.
The unemployment rate for the city was 6.1 percent January 2012,
falling from 6.8 percent a year earlier. The most common industries
are construction, public administration, transportation equipment,
professional, scientific and technical services and educational
services. Major employees include the public school system, the
city government and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
The city has been celebrated in national publications as one of
America's best run communities. It has attracted small
manufacturing plants and offices of over 70 international
corporations, including Sweden's Volvo Penta of the Americas, Inc.,
Germany's Simtech, LCC and Japan's Usui International Corp.
Chesapeake is energetically bringing new businesses to the city.
Opportunities for job seekers include a new Walmart opening in the
summer and construction work on a plant for textile restoration
company CARE.
