About... Located on the
historic Delaware River, Camden, New Jersey, has faced economic
and political struggles in recent years. With three mayors
jailed for corruption and a decline in manufacturing jobs, the
city has been in a downwards slump.
Recently, however, new
development has been rejuvenating Camden, making this
water-bound city an exciting place to live.
Camden's largest employer, the Campbell Soup Company, is
redeveloping its corporate headquarters over the next several
years. The former Sears building has been purchased for
redevelopment, and several waterfront development plans are in the
work. Another large employer, Rutgers University, is adding
dormitories to its campus in order to boost enrollment and increase
the need for faculty. The University District hosts several other
universities and has announced plans for a new medical school
facility.
Residents of Camden have many employment opportunities, from union
jobs at the river's port harbor to medical research in the large
hospital complex. Despite its troubled past, the city is moving in
a new direction and is eager for new residents and prospective
employees.
