About...
The largest city
in Vermont, Burlington is still the smallest, “largest” city in
a state. Nevertheless, it still forms the economic and cultural
hub of the eastern side of Lake Champlain. Approximately one
third of all Vermonters live in the city’s metropolitan
area.
The city’s economy is
reliant on the healthcare, education and retail sectors. In
addition to the largest employer, Fletcher Health Care, the city
is also home to the state university and Champlain Colleges.
The city is an outdoorsman’s paradise. There is skiing,
snowmobiling and other activities in winter and plenty of water
filled sports on the lake during the summer. In addition, the city
hosts the largest open air farmer’s market in the area with produce
from most of the New England states and New York.
Burlington is only an hour south of the French speaking province of
Quebec and hosts many tourists and visitors from across the border.
The city is demographically diverse and offers a wide variety of
cultural activities from the Vermont Brewer’s Fest to the Vermont
International Film Festival. In short, the city provides a
distinctly small town atmosphere with a universal
appeal.
