About... The city of
Boston, Massachusetts has close to 600,000 people. Richly
steeped in American Revolutionary War history and the only state
capital that has an ocean coastline, the city has evolved as an
international trading center. It is known for its institutions
of higher learning and has an economy buoyed by finance,
biotechnology medical research and manufacturing sectors.
Part of the larger, 7.6 million populated Greater Boston area, the
city has a colorful demography of African American, Hispanic and
Asian minority communities balancing populations that include
Irish, English, Italian, Jewish and other European descendents.
The city is a book publishing center serving as the home of Little,
Brown and Company, Pearson PLC and Houghton Mifflin among other big
publishers. Liberty Mutual insurance company, State Street
Corporation funds management and Miliken Institute in life sciences
are major firms. Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute and Tufts Medical Center are some of the many medical
institutions involved in research.
Boston is experiencing slow recovery from the recession. The most
common industries for job seekers include health care, educational
services and the professional, scientific and professional services
followed by finance and insurance. The city has a relatively high
cost of living.
