About... Billings, Montana
started principally as a planned boom town for the railroads
crossing America 1880s. Its "Magic City" moniker derives from
two factors. It has continued erupting as a boom town, recently
benefiting from new oil extraction technologies applied to the
Bakke rock formation that Montana shares with North Dakota.
The other factor sustaining the economy of Billings' 100,000
residents is its place as the largest industrial and transportation
hub and a major retail center for a wide geographical area. The
borders extend to Spokane, Washington - crossing through Idaho;
Calgary; North Dakota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Minneapolis and
Wyoming.
In 2010, the unemployment rate was 5.5 percent. December 2011, it
was an astonishing 4.8 percent. The only sector showing visible
employment growth through 2011 was education and health services.
Government employment showed substantial recovery. The most common
industries in 2009 were health care, accommodation and food
services, educational services and construction.
Major corporate outposts in Billings for job seekers include
Walmart, Exxon/Mobil, Wells Fargo, Ford, and General Electric.
Computers Unlimited, Target Corporation and Stillwater Mining
Company are among the corporations that have headquarters in the
City. Many job openings are listed online for positions in the
city.
