About... Bethlehem received
its name from a Christmas hymn sung by its Moravian first
settlers in the 18th century. In the 20th century its namesake
steel company brought the city industrial fame as the country’s
second largest steel producer and a major shipbuilder through
the two World Wars.
The city's 75,000
residents have stood on a tradition of strong industrial growth
that was affected by the recession and only recently has
demonstrated a steady recovery. The unemployment rate was 7.7
percent in April 2012, falling from 10 percent in
2010.
The most common
industries for Bethlehem are in educational services, health
care and accommodation and food services. Combined with LeHigh
Valley cities Allentown and Easton, the education and health
services, professional and business services and manufacturing
sectors showed job growth while the government sector
contracted.
Job seekers should
check the employment service listings on the LeHigh Valley
Chamber of Commerce Human Resource Services and Employment Services websites. Temporary
agencies such as Kelly and AARP Foundation WorkSearch are
listed. Major employees include St. Luke’s University Health
Network, LeHigh University and Sands Casino Resort. The city’s
mayor underlined expanding construction opportunities in his
annual State of the City Address..
