of the 112,000 residents of Berkeley, CA, who are 25 years old
and over have their bachelor's degree; over a third of this age
group have graduate or professional degrees. The city's largest
employer, who essentially defines both its economy and living
environment, is the University of California, Berkeley followed
by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a federal nuclear
sciences research center.
The city has reflected a similar economic setback during the
recession as most of the nation. The unemployment rate reached a
high point of 11.2 percent in July 2010 before falling to 8.6
percent by May 2012. The economy is showing employment.
Berkeley is one of the most liberal cities in the country. The most
common industries are education services; professional, scientific
and technical services and construction. For males, the most common
occupations are computer specialists and postsecondary teachers;
for females they are management occupations and office and
administration support services.
