Located in the
high desert at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Bend sits
amid some of the most beautiful country in the Great Northwest.
It is renowned for its outdoor, summer activities including
hiking and biking, hunting and fishing and all manner of water
sports. For the less adventurous the area is also home to
numerous golf courses. Winter brings tremendous snowfalls and
excellent skiing.
While the city’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism, it is
also the financial and cultural hub of central Oregon. Other
industries that form the core of the economy are healthcare, wood
manufacture, recreational equipment production and some high
technology. Bend is home to the largest microbrewery in the area,
Deschutes as well as the American Licorice Company, Edge Wireless
and 1859 magazine.
For many years, Bend had an exceptionally expensive real estate
market but the economic downturn has led to a significant decrease
in prices that has spurred an influx of senior citizens looking to
spend their retirement years in this jewel of a city. While real
estate has recovered somewhat, the area remains eminently
affordable for businesses and employees.
