About... In 2011, 2,700
individuals left the workforce in Battle Creek, Michigan,
accounting for a drop of unemployment from 9.5 percent to 6.9
percent. Job creation for 2012 through 2013 is projected as 2.9
percent in goods and 2.1 percent in services.
The city's largest employer is the legendary Kellogg's Company,
maker of the cornflakes breakfast cereal, with 2,000 employees in
2009, followed by the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center - once the
Battle Creek Sanitarium, a medical health facility.
Other major industries include auto supplier Denso International
and the Felpausch Food Center supermarket chain. The most common
industries in the city are manufacturing, retail trade and
construction. Most people work in production or as metal workers,
plastic workers, assemblers and fabricators and sales workers and
truck drivers.
The city of over 50,000 residents owes much of its economy to the
Kellogg brothers, John and Will. As an M.D., John ran the
Seventh-day Adventist Battle Creek Sanitarium. He and his brother
later developed cornflakes and established their company in
1906.
The city lies within southern Michigan and is often connected to
Kalamazoo, lying east of it. Job seekers with at least an
associate's degree have good chances of finding work.
