Bakersfield, known
as B-Town to locals, is growing rapidly. Over the last 40 years,
the city's population has increased 400 percent as new residents
flock to the area's pleasant weather and strong economy.
Many different companies have based their headquarters in the city
due to the area's low sales tax and non-existent utility tax. Kern
County, home to B-Town, produces more oil than any other country in
America. Chevron is one of the area's largest employers.
Agriculture also dominates, with many regional produce distributors
basing their offices in the city.
Industry and manufacturing jobs are on the rise in the area, aided
by the low tax rates and ready access to Los Angeles and Oakland.
Other large employers include the city government, health insurance
companies, and local hospitals.
Also called Nashville West, Bakersfield is home to a robust music
scene and many cultural events. An annual Native American pow-wow,
a Pride Festival, minor league baseball, hockey, and basketball
teams, plus numerous high schools and two college campuses combine
to make this California city entertaining for the whole family.
Bakersfield brings together warm weather and a business-friendly
culture to create a booming economy and a wonderful place to
live.
