About... Alton is a small
city in western Illinois, along the Mississippi River about 25
miles north of St. Louis. It is part of the Greater St. Louis
metropolitan area. Though the town is small, it has some
historical significance as the site of the last of the
Lincoln-Douglas debates. The city is also the final resting
place of martyred abolitionist editor Elijah Lovejoy, and the
birthplace of Miles Davis.
The cost of living here is below the national average. It is home
to the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine, and
many other educational institutions are within easy commuting
distance in St. Louis. Major medical care is provided by the Alton
Memorial Hospital, and by Saint Anthony’s Health Center.
For much of its lifetime Alton has been an industrial city, and
Alton Steel, Inc. and Global Brass and Copper, Inc. are still major
employers. Over the last few decades it has partially transitioned
to a tourist-based economy, and many of the jobs here are provided
by Argosy Casino.
The American Water
Company and the Olin Corporation provide many of the other
private sector jobs for the town.
