About... Albany, Georgia,
has cultivated a reputation as a beautiful, green city. Also
known as the Good Life City and the Artesian City, the town
employs an arborist to keep streets looking good. The city parks
department has 77 sites in town, and several nature trails
thread through the city.
Multiple historic sites add another form of beauty to this former
plantation city, as do the abundant museums, theatres and music
sites. The city also features a zoo and a planetarium.
The Marine Corps Logistics Base is the largest employer. Local
hospitals and school systems employ many, as do companies like
Procter & Gamble, Miller Brewing Company and BellSouth
Telecommunications. A city tax offers a $3,500 credit for every job
created, giving companies a powerful incentive to start operations
in the Artesian City.
Historically black Albany State University, Darton College and
Albany Technical College keep the population educated.
A commercial airport, freight rail, a Greyhound bus station and
multiple highways offer easy transportation options.
Native son Ray Charles is honored with a downtown plaza and statue.
The Artesian City is slowly recovering its economic spirit
following the Great Recession, but the city never lost its
soul.
