About... Akron's unions,
rubber industries and races fought hard and bitter among
themselves to produce a strong manufacturing, livable city. Its
200,000 residents were once home to Rubber City magnates
Firestone, General Tire and Goodrich. Goodyear Tire & Rubber
remains with its world-acclaimed, two-glass tower Goodyear
Polymer Center at the University of Akron.
Blimps were once built by Zeppelin Company. Hamburgers and caramel
corn were introduced by the Menches Brothers, and Ferdinand
Schumacher started the oatmeal industry. John Brown stayed here and
Sojourner Turner delivered the famed "I Am A Woman" speech.
Akron's unemployment rate was 7.3 percent December 2011, and the
city is showing slow, sustained recovery through most sectors. The
information sector has held steady without decline since July 2011.
Other services, financial activities and education and health
sectors have mainly stayed level since September 2011.
The top employers are Summa Health System, Akron General Health
System and Medical Center, Goodyear, Summit County and Kent State
University. The city thrives on a Biomedical Corridor bridging
industry and research schools and projected to produced thousands
of jobs. Job seekers may find work at InfoCision call center and
new data technology center investments by PlusOne Communications,
AT&T and Involta LCC.
