About... Syracuse is a city
of 140,000 people in central New York, just south of the
juncture of Interstates 81 and 90. The first European settlers
here came to trade with the Onondaga Indians, members of the
Iroquois Confederacy. The town was incorporated in the early
1800’s, and became a major center of salt production. Prior to
the Civil War, the city was a major center of the abolitionist
movement and a stop in the Underground Railroad.
After the war, Syracuse became a major manufacturing center. Much
of the industry has declined since the 1970’s, but New Process
Gear, Inc. and Lockheed Martin are still major employers there,
along with the Wegmans and P&C food market chains. The city has
two major universities, as well as smaller colleges, and several
hospitals.
Syracuse has an international airport, and three Amtrak lines run
through it. Greyhound and Trailways both have bus lines through the
city, as does the Central New York Transportation
Authority.
