About... Omaha's history
was fiercely sketched and written with plenty of civil unrest
and riots. It emerged as a frontier town in Nebraska, carving
itself out as a Western gateway and major meatpacking center
facing sister city Council Bluffs, Iowa across the Missouri
River.
Two spectacular race crimes, a sensational kidnapping of a
meatpacker's son, organized crime and yellow journalism vividly
marked the city's evolution. Its military air bases furnished the
atomic bomb-bearing plane Enola Gray and provided homes for bombers
of the 1950s, 24-hour running Strategic Air Command.
Grit and energy have forged a strong economic base for Omaha. Home
of billionaire Warren Buffett and several Fortune 500 companies,
major corporations include Union Pacific Railroad and ConAgra Foods
and tech companies LinkedIn and PayPal. Showing a low 4.7 percent
unemployment rate December 2011, major industries have been
construction, finance and insurance, and accommodation and food
services.
Growing sectors for job seekers are trade, transportation and
utilities, professional and business services, educational and
health services and leisure and hospitality. Omaha reflects a
diversified economy and a stable labor force and is expected to
experience good job growth through the year.
