country's most ethnically diverse populations has resulted in a
show of urban muscle pushing it into the 21st Century. The
city's unemployment rate was 9.8 percent March 2012, relatively
high but showing stability and substantial turnarounds in
several sectors.
The construction, other services and manufacturing sectors have
shown declining unemployment rates over the year. The education and
health services sectors have shown marked increases in job growth,
while trade, transportation, and utilities and information services
have stabilized. The professional and business services sectors are
showing positive growth.
Top employees in the city include the Port of Oakland and the Oakland
International Airport. Major businesses include Kaiser
Permanente, Matson, Dreyer’s, Clorox and Cost Plus World
Markets. Construction projects are to begin this year that will
revitalize the sports Coliseum area and renovate the Convention
Center.
