About... Long Beach is a
thriving city of 462,000 residents whose economy has been based
on its major port facilities emphasizing trade with the Pacific
Rim countries and also on several oil fields providing
significant oil production. The city has considerable arts
activity, lots of Hollywood films are shot within its borders,
and there's a vibrant gay community.
Conjoined with the Los
Angeles area, Long Beach's economy had a high unemployment rate
of 11.0 percent April 2012, but it has, in general, shown marked
improvement. The information and financial activities sectors
have demonstrated positive job growth year-to-year April. The
construction, professional and business services and leisure
services sectors are also showing stabilized growth.
Boeing is the top
private employer. Major public employers include the public
schools, California State University, Long Beach and the city.
An improving economy should show more jobs in the manufacturing,
electronic and automotive industries.
The economic crisis in
Europe will continue to affect the city's turnaround. Job
seekers are encouraged to have bachelor degrees. Several
construction projects are forthcoming for the port and Miller
Children's and Memorial hospitals.
The city maintains an
Employment Services website for job seekers
and a One Stop website with employment
resources.
