About... Evansville is
situated at the hub of the Tri-State Region of Indiana,
Illinois, and Kentucky. Also located near the towns of Henderson
and Owensboro, Kentucky, the surrounding population center
extends northward and includes about 350,000 residents.
Evansville has had a strong manufacturing base for many years,
though it has seen some recent decline. Often referred to as "The
River City," it has a rich and long history as a commercial center
and shipping port because of its optimum location near the
confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
Additionally, it is an
academic center for the region, being the home of the University
of Evansville and Southern Indiana University. The small-city
community is also home to several community colleges and
technical schools.
It is the home to Thunder on the Ohio boat races that have
traditionally been held each summer at the Ohio River's
bend. The significant artistic
and cultural community has supported the region for many years with
the 8,500 seat outside-arena Mesker Theatre and the City Zoo. The
Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra performs at the vintage 2,000
seat Victory Theatre on the downtown city walkway.
