About... Essentially the
westernmost point in Texas, the city of El Paso with its Mexican
neighbor, Ciudad Juarez, forms a metropolis of over two million
people. Its economy is broad based with extensive healthcare,
education and defense institutions.
El Paso is home to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
which serves as the regional hub for all of southwestern Texas.
Fort Bliss, one of the largest U.S. Army training facilities, and
Holloman Air Force base are also located nearby.
The rest of the economy is highly dependent on the service,
manufacturing and transportation sectors. In particular, call
centers have become extremely important to the local economy in the
last ten years. As well, Mexico operates a free trade zone just
south of the city that makes it one of the most important entry
points for goods from our neighbor to the south. There is an almost
continual flow of trucks across the Juarez-El Paso border.
Culturally, El Paso has a distinctively Mexican flavor. There are
enormous numbers of commuters from both sides of the border and the
two cultures are inextricably entwined. The “Sun City” enjoys a
robust business climate and a vibrant multicultural one. Like most
cities in Texas, it is extremely affordable for both businesses and
its inhabitants.
