About... Charleston is city
of somewhat divided loyalties. While it is more generally known
as the “Home of Hospitality, it is also the most northern,
Southern city and the most southern, Northern city. In any event
the people of Charleston embrace both cultures with the same
vigor.
Situated on the confluence of two rivers, the capital and largest
city of the state of West Virginia is the political, commercial and
cultural hub of the state. It grew from humble beginnings during
the Civil War to encompass a thriving economy based on the coal,
natural gas, retail and technology sectors.
Today, Charleston is home to several large corporations including
Appalachian Power, Mountaineer Gas and the Mid Atlantic Research
and Innovation Center. In addition, the regional restaurant chain,
Shoney’s, was founded in the city in 1953.
The city also plays host to a wide variety of fairs, festivals and
other cultural events most notably the West Virginia Dance and Film
Festivals. In short, the city has embraced its unique position as a
gateway to both the North and South of America and provides
excellent work and life opportunities for all its
residents.
