About... The early English
settlers of Bridgeport, Connecticut relied mostly on fishing and
farming. These eventually gave way to manufacturing, and
industry in the region increased up until the late twentieth
century.
Bridgeport is the fourth largest financial center in New England
today. Fairfield County boasts a dozen Fortune 500 companies
outside the city limits. Local government works hard toward
Bridgeport’s economic growth with business redevelopment and
community revitalization as major priorities. Waterfront retail
shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilities are all part of
the Master Plan. The city also has two major hospitals to its
credit.
Bridgeport, once dubbed “Park City” because of its many public
parks owes some of its popularity to the famous P.T. Barnum. In the
late 19th century, Barnum and others donated property to form the
delightful Seaside Park. It is now 375 exquisite acres of sports
fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, beautiful beach, and boat launch
areas.
