About... Austin has a
liberal reputation unlike any other in the Lone Star State. It
is home to such world class institutions as Dell Computer,
Freescale Semiconductor and Whole Foods Markets. Still, it
remains a city dedicated to fostering small scale neighborhood
businesses and that maintains a strong cultural component.
The city is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World’ due to
the success of the locally produced Austin City Limits television
show and for the innumerable numbers of bands that hail from this
relatively small city.
The economy of the state capital of Texas revolves around the state
government and the state university but, as mentioned, the tech
sector employs tens of thousands while the tourist and service
industries provide many jobs for the multicultural work force. The
city has an entrepreneurial spirit that encourages business and
residents to take a chance.
Unusual for a city in Texas, a veritable army of musicians,
artists, students and bohemians promote the countercultural
characteristics of this vibrant city. The adage, “Keep Austin
Weird,” is just the latest manifestation of this process. Despite
its contradictions, the city remains a fast growing, pro-business
city that also focuses on the other priorities in life.
