Anchorage, a
consolidated city-borough, is the northernmost American major
city and the hub of Alaska's economy. It is the largest city in
Alaska, containing 40% of Alaska's population, and is considered
the most tax-friendly city in America, according to
Kiplinger.
The city began as a coincidental hub, serving as a focal point for
transportation of natural resources in the early 1900s. Now, the
major economic sectors presently include transportation, resource
extraction, tourism, state and federal government work, military,
and corporate headquarters. The military, state government, and
federal government constitute a bit over 15% of the employed. The
largest and most visible industry, though, is the resource sector,
particularly petroleum. Many offices for petroleum companies such
as BP and ConocoPhillips are located in Anchorage.
Anchorage also serves as the focal point for tourists;
adventure-seeking tourists typically set foot in Anchorage before
heading off to other destinations in Alaska.
